Summer Road Trip 2014

On Sunday morning, August 24th, my son and I embarked on our very first Road Trip. Because of the fact that our trip to see my father in LA will be delayed (due to their moving once again), I decided that for our summer vacation we would take a drive down the coast. My goal was to avoid freeways at all cost and to enjoy our beautiful California coastline.

So our route began as follows:

Petaluma to Point Reyes

Then on down through Marin County, where we joined Highway 101 which took us to the Golden Gate Bridge.

BUT:  a minor setback (but still enjoyable): As we approached the bridge I realized I didn’t have bridge toll; I had only $100 bills!  So I quickly took the last exit before the bridge and drove down into Sausalito to try to get some change.  My son had never been to Sausalito and was quite impressed by the steep winding hills and the beautiful views.  In fact it had been so many years since I’d been there that I was newly impressed, as well!  I felt rather ignorant, however, when we were to learn that one no longer has to pay bridge toll.  They simply take a photo of your license plate as you go through the plaza and mail you a bill!  So I guess I will be paying bridge toll when I end up getting the bill in the mail.  Strange, but I imagine it helps speed the traffic through.  So – onto the bridge

…and on through the Park Presidio area and out of the City.

Following the signs to stay on Highway 1, we soon found ourselves in Pacifica – and what a lovely little town.  We decided to stop for a little bit and stretch our legs.Pacifica1

And on down Highway 1 through numerous beach towns – what a beautiful drive – and very little traffic!

But we weren’t stopping at Santa Cruz this time – we were bound for Monterey.

And at the end of a lovely, but rather LONG day, we arrived at our destination:

The Otter Inn, Monterey, CA – just one block up from Cannery Row and a short walk to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

We arrived about dinner time – very hungry – so what else?  We ordered pizza to be delivered.  Yum…

And this ends PART I of our Road Trip.  [To Be Continued…]
